Acting ain’t an easy job. It isn’t all about glamor and fame. It can be dangerous especially when actors decide to perform action scenes/stunts on their own. While actors often opt for a stunt double to take on their action sequences, there are a few select celebs who choose to skip the double and do it themselves. Why do they do it? Many believe it’s more authentic and makes the scenes more believable. Here, we have a countdown of top 10 celebrities who perform their own stunts. These are the death-defying entertainers that laugh in the face of danger.
10. Jason Statham
This intense action actor almost always performs his own stunts; so much that he now feels that fans expect him to perform every single one. From car crashes to scuba diving, this actor is not known to back down from a challenge. He is an expert in kickboxing and Jujitsu and has been trained in martial arts. During the filming of The Expendables 3, Statham had a close call when the transport truck he was driving had a break failure. However he remains quiet about any failed or scary stunts and continues to wow audiences with his skills.
9. Zoe Bell
Zoe Bell was Uma Thurman’s stunt double in Kill Bill. When it came time to make his grindhouse flick, Quentin Tarantino wanted a leading lady who could handle any stunts that he threw at her. This led him to tap Bell to play herself in the film.
8. Tom Cruise
Cruise made a huge shift in his career from a dramatic young actor to an adult action hero. His involvement as the producer and star of the Mission Impossible movies allowed him to risk his own life, as can be seen in the picture.
7. Daniel Craig
The blond Bond (James Bond) decided to spice things up for 007 and chose to act just like a real secret agent would. “It was important to me that I do as many of my own stunts as possible for authenticity,” he has said. “I wanted to be seen jumping from crane to crane, physically exerting myself. I didn’t get fit just to take my shirt off.” So, what exactly did he have to do? During the opening scene of the 2006 film, Craig chased a bad guy into a building site, battled him 200 feet from the ground, and then performed a death-defying crane jump.
6. Kristen Stewart
Fearless both on and off the set, Stewart takes pride in performing almost all of her own stunts. From the famous Twilight Series to the most recent Snow White and the Huntsman, this actress trained hard to make sure she was fit for her roles. Stewart also overcame her lifelong fear of horses in order to film some of the intense action scenes. Her stunts have included jumping into freezing cold water from high above to intense fight scenes, she is definitely determined to mark her place in Hollywood.
5. Matt Damon
It is hard to imagine, but there were people who claimed that Matt Damon was not the right actor to play a role of Jason Bourne. However, he went ahead to prove his critics wrong. In an interview, Damon said that he was particularly nervous when performed his stunt in the water. When fright sets in, a stunt could be perilous to all of stunt casts, but Matt Demon had it under his control. Another scene in the film saw him jump off the bridge.
4. Christian Bale
This is far from being a surprise. Anyone that plays Batman is inevitably going to start believing that they are the real Batman. Of course, Bale did his own stunts long before the Batman days. Now it is just that much cooler.
3. Angelina Jolie
In the Disney film, Maleficent, Jolie did many of her stunts including ones that required “flying.” Those scenes required her to be hoisted up high with the help of a large crane. It’s hard enough to act while standing on the ground and even tougher to do the same while hanging from a wire. This wasn’t Jolie’s first film to do her own stunts. She did a lot for her Tomb Raider films as well.
In an interview with Simon Crane, the stunt coordinator for Tomb Raider, he said, “‘I would rate Angelina very highly against all of the action actors I have worked with…We’ve done a couple of sequences that involve stunts you won’t have seen a woman do before, and basically she is doing almost all of these stunts herself. We did a bungee-jumping sequence, and she went through three months’ training to be able to do it…I was very impressed.”
2. Jackie Chan
A serious no-brainer. People go to Jackie Chan’s movies not to watch him spit out badly-written lines, but to see him jump, roll, and use his martial arts moves throughout the flick. The man has broken nearly every bone in his body at least once largely because of his stunts.
1. Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger may be approaching his 70s, but he has proved time and again that age is just a number when it comes to performing his own stunt. The 66 year old actor filmed his very first scenes in Terminator: Genesis as he returns to reprise the role he first played in the 1984’s Terminator. He filmed the scenes alongside a 27 year old Game of Thrones star, Emilia Clarke. In movies such as Commando and Conan, Schwarzenegger has battled wolves, fallen from buildings, and jumped off of flying planes.
Performing stunts may be dangerous, but it will certainly earn the performer the street creed in Hollywood. While a number of actors are opting for a stunt double to step in on dangerous or even the least dangerous actions, a number of actors are showing they are as courageous to do their own stunts as their on-screen actors.
